Speed Merchants Reaches the Apex (Cup)

Speed Merchants membership and participation has grown steadily throughout the year, and Fall Series Race #3 at Ruiz Raceway was the high water mark thanks to the inaugural Apex Invitational Cup. Thirty Speed Merchants entries plus an additional 15 Apex Cup entries turned the Fastest Afternoon In Slot Car Racing into the Fastest Evening as well!

Apex Invitational Cup Runneth Over !!

The inaugural Apex Invitational Cup was a fast, competitive, and fun day of racing. I have to thank everyone that came to my Invitational, the fun that everyone had made all the effort worthwhile. A big thanks to Tony Ruiz for providing the race site, to Doug Shepard for handling the race administration, to Carmen Vasquez and Lupe Ruiz for taking care of the food, and to Bob Lincoln for supporting the race. It was my pleasure to have presented to Gary Beedle the Vanguard Award for his outstanding contributions to our sport.

All the invitees that attended, and Bob Scott and Craig Correia (they qualified by finishing well in the Speed Merchants Modified event) girded up for the qualifying heats. Garry Haworth put up the big numbers to lead the qualifiers for the main, followed very closely by Tony Ruiz. Also qualifying for the big show were Ben Vasquez Sr., Rick Linn, Ben Vasquez Jr., and (just sneaking in) Rick Jocham (by one lap over Nelson Mark).

In the main event Garry, again, set the numbers for everyone to beat. It was left for Tony and Rick Linn to chase Garry down. A hush prevailed over the crowd as the racers were intensely focusing their energies on getting their hands on the Invitational Cup. Tony's car wasn't as sharp as it was in the qualifier and eventually finished up third, just beating out Ben Jr.. Rick had the fastest car on the track, but was hampered by a so-so first heat. At the finish, Garry's lap total prevailed with Rick coming up two laps short. Garry had quite a celebration as we all toasted his win.
