Spring Series Race #3

Hosted by: 21st Century Raceway

Try It, You'll Like It!
Speed Merchants welcomes Francis McEntee, Gary Morgan and Dennis Cagle to Southern California’s Premier Slot Car Racing Organization. Are Championship Series points retroactive with your membership dues? You bet!

Race Event Schedule Change
Pocket Rocket Raceway and 21st Century Raceway have conspired to confuse everyone and switch race dates! What will those zany track owners think of next? Hey thanks you guys. Please take note before they change it again:

They can’t fool us, it’s easy to get to either place!

Drivers Meeting Resolves Critical Issue
Speed Merchants races for points and points add up to the semi-annual Points Series Championship. Best five out of six races. So the burning issue becomes: how to spend the Awards Fund that’s been accumulating every month?

At the pre-race Drivers Meeting an informal-ex-post-facto-straw-poll-telephone-survey-proxy-vote revealed an overwhelming preference for individually engraved hardwood plaques and etched glass trophies with genuine marble bases. All dues paying present and voting Speed Merchants members voted unanimously not to allow plated plastic trophies as suitable recognition for our racing accomplishments.

Tony Ruiz volunteered to secure the Speed Merchants Holy Grail hardware since he has all the money anyway!

Six Pack To Go
The advent of the Wizzard Patriot II and the continuing popularity of the Slottech Panther has gone a long way to level the competitive playing field, and nowhere was it more evident than in the Modified Main Event of Race #3. The six man round robin saw 2nd through 6th place separated by only 17 laps. All right, who slipped that Tomy in there!

7-Up!
Mechanical breakdowns happen often enough in Neo racing despite using industrial strength equipment, and that’s only if the spectacular crash impact doesn’t get you first. Often a fleet of Neo cars will start a race only to have just a few left running at the finish.

The seven man round robin Neo Main Event at Race #3 featured not only seven cars running full tilt to the end, but also a total field spread of only 50 laps and only a two lap margin of victory. This pattern of high quality competition was also evident in the R/O Main Event with the same seven man field separated by only 36 laps. Now that’s a well oiled machine!

Working For The Weekend
Hats off to Mike Low, Ben Vasquez Sr. and Dennis Cagle who ingeniously juggled the responsibilities of their regular Saturday jobs into the Speed Merchants racing schedule. Where there’s a will to race there’s always a way!

Speaking Of Zany…..
Last time out Speed Merchants demonstrated why having fewer turn marshals means turning more laps. This time out TQ Jackpots had everyone Dialing For Dollars. One minute, one dollar, one shot. Low time wins. Winner take all, and then some…

Buena Park Raceway

Ben Vasquez Jr. would like to thank Chris & Lenore Gallegos of Buena Park Raceway for sponsoring the special Speed Merchants Neo TQ Jackpot! Ben cut a 1.550 lap for a new 21st Century Ambassador track record while raking in the cash!

For interested slot car fans, Buena Park Raceway is hosting the 30th Annual USRA Nats for 1/24 scale slot cars at their new and expanded facility. Scale classes race April 4-9 and Wing classes race July 30-August 6. Buena Park Raceway is also supporting Speed Merchants with a full color display ad in the official USRA Nats 2000 program. Best of luck you “big” car guys!

Well yes, they also think of themselves as “speed merchants”…..

The Situation's Out Of Control - Everything's Gone Haywire!!
One of the most enterprising and successful Southern California H.O. racing promoters in recent years has been none other than Speed Merchants’ own award winning Garry Haworth of Haywire Raceway. Haywire Raceway has played host to everything from Turkey Shoots to Springnats along with a variety of other lesser racing events. And you just never know when Haywire Productions is going to catch you on slot car video!

The bad news is that if you missed Spring Series Race #2 at Haywire Raceway you didn’t rack up hardly any points. The good news is that you can redeem yourself at the very next Speed Merchants event which is Spring Series Race #4 at Haywire Raceway on Saturday April 15.

Now that you’ve paid your taxes it’s time to go racing!
