P2 Cup Challenge IROC Race
P2 Cup Challenge

Presented by
H.O. Speed Merchants of Southern California

Featuring the Patriot 2 Extreme:
Wizzard High Performance, Inc.
In the spirit of cross-promotional marketing Speed Merchants conducted the UFHORA P2 Cup Challenge regional qualifying race for Southern California as a feature event at The Big Shop hosted by Dennis Tate. At stake was eligibility to compete at the 2001 UFHORA Nationals P2 Cup Challenge.

Since Speed Merchants is otherwise oriented towards high performance rather than entry level equipment and racing, an IROC race program ensured that all Speed Merchants prepared cars would be equally and properly equipped, and that only pure driving skill under the tightest technical scrutiny and the most level possible playing field would determine the most qualified Top 3 Finalists from among the nine participants.

The stock Patriot 2 Extreme cars themselves had their crown gears re-spaced, the body posts were drilled out, the body pins were taped, ski springs were tweaked for slightly less tension, and each car had 30 minutes of power supply break in. Each car's body was color keyed to its lane. One half drop of oil at crucial points per the manufacturer's instructions and we're off to the races!

A fifth P2E IROC "green" car was available all morning for practice laps and making controller adjustments. This was helpful because when you race IROC style at The Big Shop it's step up, hook up, shut up  - and drive!

The track was cleaned to keep things fresh. The fastest car was assigned to the fastest lane just for temptation. Total laps across both Semis determined move ups. Each heat of the Semis and Main began just as as soon as the cars were inspected, prepped and returned to the starting line. Skis and tires were cleaned after each heat, cars were oiled once per semi/main. Partial laps counted only in the last heat. And no running lap totals were given out during the race.

Ty Brittain (1st), Dennis Tate (2nd) and Gary Morgan (3rd) were indeed up for the challenge!

The stock packaged P2E cars themselves showed little or no wear even under such grueling racing conditions as a punishing IROC event, and the only mechanical mishap was one car's brush barrel allen screw backing out. Oh well, justice and fairness still prevailed since the guy who prepped the cars was driving it at the time.

Special thanks to Wizzard High Performance, Inc. for their assistance and support. The Speed Merchants IROC Used Car Raffle following the race contributed an additional $53 towards the Spring Championship Points Series awards fund. For Gary Morgan and Dennis Tate it was icing on the cake following their earlier Speed Merchants event wins. And for Ty Brittain the $2.00 to enter the P2 Cup Challenge was a better bet than on any horse at Del Mar!
