RACE SUMMARY

Sixteen drivers from Idaho and Washington gathered in Boise, Idaho over the first weekend of May for the 4th Annual Idaho State Championships.  The ISC is a weekend of three races, a Modified Thunderjet Race fashioned after “The Fray in Ferndale”, a Drivers’ Challenge Cup Race, and a NASCAR Stock Car Race, testing a driver’s talent at all three disciplines to crown an overall Champion.  The competition was fierce, the driving excellent, and everyone had a wonderful time.  Sam Shearman of Boise, Idaho won the Overall Title as well as the newly established “Hidden Springs Cup”, given to the driver with the most overall points.

This year we decided to change the challenge of what the ISC is all about, from driving a slot car on established and familiar circuits to driving on a new track.  We decided to build a replica of the Watkins Glen Speedway in New York State, where NASCAR has one of its two road course races, and race all three disciplines of cars on the one track.  After building and lengthening what became known as “Idaho at the Glen” Motor Speedway, the track was approximately 125 feet when completed and had drivers racing from a 14-inch riser looking down at the track.  This would challenge the drivers to run on a track they had never seen until Race Day, as well as test their car building for a track longer and faster than anything we had ever run before.  All racers would be awarded overall points for how they placed in each Race, starting with 20 points for the Race, 19 for second, and so on.  The Overall Winner would have the most points from the three Races.

The Thunderjet Race would be run May 2nd at the Shearmanator II Raceway, after realizing the new track was too long to be functional for this Race.  Shearmanator II is a challenging track built especially for T-Jets.  Mark St. Clair of Boise ran the table, winning all of his heat races en route to the #1 seed in the elimination mains.  After 11 elimination mains, dropping the final place driver in each, the final four drivers were Mark St. Clair, Don Jump of Yakima, WA, Joe Giegel of Spokane, WA, and Sam Shearman.  Once the four heats of the “A” Main were run and the points tallied, Joe Giegel emerged the winner, with Mark second, Don third, and Sam fourth.

On May 3rd we moved to “Idaho at the Glen” for the Drivers’ Challenge Cup and Stock Car Races.  In the Drivers’ Challenge, we took Lifelike “M” chassis directly out of the box, put NASCAR Craftsman Series Truck bodies on them, and raced.  Each truck stayed on its assigned lane, with the drivers rotating to drive a new truck during each heat.  Identical controllers provided by Hidden Springs Miniature Autos were used so the drivers could only rely on their driving skill to come up with the most laps possible.  This Race is unique in that you only get to see the truck you are racing twice, so you need to get used to it fast in order to drive well.  After 2 rounds of 3-minute heats, Sam Shearman was the winner by 4-tenths of at lap over Don Jump, with Joe Giegel taking third and Mike Pope of Boise fourth.

After Lunch and a perpetual Swap Meet, it was time for the fast cars—the NASCAR Stock Car Race.  Most drivers used AFX Super G+ chassis; with the only modifications allowed being rear tire combinations and balanced motors.  After qualifying, with most fast laps being between 8 and 9 seconds (on a 125’ track), Ryan Hansen had the car to beat with 7.55 seconds.  After a round of 5-minute heats, Ryan was very much in command with a 7-lap lead over Sam Shearman in second.  After rotating drivers to race according to first round results, Ryan again dazzled us with his speed and control, taking first place with 281 total laps, 12 laps better than Sam Shearman with 269.  Brady Fuller of Boise took third place over Mike Pope by less than 30 feet with 262 laps.

In the end, Sam Shearman was deemed the overall Champion with 56 points, with Joe Giegel second with 52, Ryan Hansen third and Don Jump fourth both with 50 (Ryan taking third by a tie-breaker).  All drivers received trophies and donated prizes from Mark St. Clair, Brent Coombs, and Bill Lewis of Sight and Sound by Design, our gracious host of the garage where “Idaho at the Glen” was built.  We thank everyone for a great weekend of racing and look forward to a bigger and better 5th Annual Idaho State Championships next year.
