Driver Of The Year Trophy

This event, sponsored by Auto Trader magazine was run to attract new and novice model car drivers. The qualifying rounds were held at the Performance and Sports car Show, Newcastle Telewest Arena in May and this, the final was held at Riverside Raceway’s Miami Black track on June 6th.

All Drivers raced 3 qualifying heats of two 3 minute segments, the last two heats of which were on lanes of their choice by qualifying in the first and 2nd heats. The best heat run of two lanes counted for the semi-final. The top 12 drivers went through to the semi-finals of 2 x 4 minute runs. The top 6 going to a final of 100 laps on a choice of lane decided by semi placings.

Gareth Johnson, although figuring strongly in the heats took a wall shot in the semis and missed the Final by one place. The final saw Tom Chapman lead the race until 3/4’s distance and was then passed by a hard pushing John Brown who took the title.
