13 YEAR OLD RIVERSIDE RACER WINS NATIONAL TITLE
AGAINST ADULT COMPETITION!

Alex Newton

Alex Newton from Ryton has become British Slot Car racing Association national Novice Champion of 2000.

This coveted title requires entrants to qualify for the national final (this year in the Isle of Man) by successfully racing in three heavily contested, regional area qualifying events in the previous September - February period and then racing against 24+ selected, qualified entrants from around the UK aged between 12 & 40+.

Alex who suffers from Conrady’s syndrome which restricts growth of the spine has been racing at Riverside for a year and has found in Slot Car Racing a superb outlet for his undeniably competitive spirit.

Riverside Raceway is proud the Alex has become the second " Riverside " racer in successive years to become National Novice Champion, 15 year old Kevin Noon from Blaydon being last year’s Champion.

Riverside Raceway has become the North East’s premier venue for all types of Slot Car racing and has active racers form just 7 years old to adult, all racing in regular championship events.

Riverside Raceway is producing some REAL young talent from the ranks of our junior racers.

In 1999 alone we have produced 3 National Champions and a runner up.

In May of this year, 15 year old Kevin Noon became British Slot Car Racing Association National Novice Champion. Kevin is now racing both 1/32nd & 1/24th Scale slot cars in addition to the Scalextric racing he started out with and is showing great promise for National standard racing in the millennium year.

The National Scalextric Championships (held in Manchester) was yet another result for Riverside’s juniors. Young Lewis Williams (8) took the National under 9’s Championship.

Marcus Ridley (13) won the National under 15’s Championship and Holly Ridley, Marcus’s 14 year old sister was Runner-Up in the under 15’s class.

Looking to the future, our juniors are refining their skills and we hope for yet another BSCRA National Novice Champion. in the millennium. Despite his lack of physical stature, Alex Newton (12) is more than making up for his height with an almost uncanny skill level, displaying an ability to drive any slot car from production S16d’s to Eurosport and giving the adults a hard time into the bargain.
